Critical Expresse: Drillbit Taylor Steven Brill
Summary: This is the plunge for Ryan and Wade: today they return to school. Only they have the bad idea to intervene in the hazing of a comrade and quickly become the preferred terror of the school, Filkins targets. Given the inaction of the headmaster, they decided to help themselves by hiring p4cm a bodyguard. They are bamboozled by Drillbit Taylor, a deserter tramp who needs money to flee the country. Drillbit but will gradually become friends with boys and take its mission to heart ...
At the moment, it does not go three months without a new film strip Apatow not landed on the screens. Knocked p4cm Up and Superbad after and before Pineapple Express, Drillbit Taylor so here's a comedy again taking part in the high school environment. And besides, the film once again written by Seth Rogen, could be seen as a prequel to Superbad. The three students are the same characters (the big, the timid and the freak weird voice) and the film is set at the entrance to the high school, or Superbad talking about the end of high school. But the real difference with the previous films in the Apatow gang is especially the presence headlining a renowned person Owen Wilson so the comic actor talent is no longer in doubt. A presence that is both the strength and weakness of the film. Force because Wilson always comes out two or three replicas hilarious and very funny guard the peace corps, but also weak because its presence somewhat impede the realism of the film. For we must admit, one of the trademarks of Apatow was some form of realism, especially in the characters' personalities. Here, the character of Drillbit is quite outrageous p4cm and swear a bit with the rest of the film. More damaging, it crushes its partners on screen, p4cm certainly too young to hold a candle p4cm to a player p4cm of the stature of Wilson. Similarly, we feel that the director relies heavily on the presence of Wilson to raise the mayonnaise.
Still, the idea of transposing codes western (the hat worn by Wilson leaves no doubt of that intent) in a student comedy pays and allows tasty diversions. The frame is almost a carbon copy of that of the Magnificent p4cm Seven and the film is full of winks to genre (which empty hallways and doors of classes which close when the bad guys arrive, the "duel" final). There is even a great scene pastiche of Jaws, when the three heroes are pursued by the car of their nemesis and they try to take refuge in a garage with the door closing soon.
In the end, without being totally ashamed p4cm (laugh regularly and we do not really see the time passing), Drillbit Taylor is still the first semi ratage Apatow. Hopefully Pineapple Express, which looks particularly crazy (James Franco has just huge air) comes back level.
