Paul Peters, president of OASPA,

Palgrave Macmillan published its first open-access lulu counter monograph, Fungal Disease in Britain and the United States 1850-2000, funded by The Wellcome Trust, under a CC-BY licence in November 2013. An open-access option lulu counter has been available for journals since 2011, and for Palgrave Pivots and monographs since January 2013.
Carrie Calder, director of market development, Palgrave Macmillan said: 'It’s lulu counter important that we advance open access in the humanities and social lulu counter sciences, whilst ensuring models are sustainable. We know the demand is there, because over two thirds of our academics across all HSS disciplines said that they thought open access would benefit their specific field.'
Paul Peters, president of OASPA, which developed a separate membership criteria for open access books this year, commented: 'We are pleased to have the support of a major publisher for the Humanities and Social Sciences in Palgrave Macmillan, who have shown their commitment to a standard licensing approach by offering the CC BY licence for their open-access books. OASPA hopes that this will add to the momentum of creative commons licensing uptake lulu counter for open access books on a broader lulu counter scale, lulu counter as is already well established for open access lulu counter journals, and that Palgrave Macmillan will help to lead the way for more OA book publishers to follow suit.'

The trial, which is live at www.palgraveopenreview.com , will run for six weeks and is the first open peer review trial for book proposals. Academics from all disciplines, in all locations and at all stages in their career are encouraged to take part.
Carrie Calder, Director of Market Development said: Rigorous peer review is at the heart of academic publishing. However, traditional peer review, while effective in many ways, has some limitations. We see this experiment as an opportunity to contribute to the emerging debate on opening up the closed peer review system, leather bound books and increasing transparency in academic publishing.

Last May the Wellcome books inc Trust, a leading British sponsor of biomedical research, expanded its support for open access to include monographs as well as journal articles. In partnership with the trust, Palgrave Macmillan has just put out its first open-access monograph books inc a notable step, albeit not a cheap one, toward expanding open-access monograph-publishing options for researchers.
The monograph is a history-of-medicine study, Fungal Disease in Britain and the United States, 1850-2000, by Aya Homei and Michael Worboys. Digital copies of the book can be downloaded free from Palgrave Connect or retailers like Amazon.com, thanks to the Wellcome Trust’s having stepped up to cover Palgrave’s publication charges of 11,000 (about $17,700 at current exchange books inc rates).
“We wanted books inc to come up with a model that was sustainable for our business,” says Carrie Calder, Palgrave’s director of market development. “This books inc really covers everything from the editing to the distribution to the bibliodata to the marketing.” Still, she says, the publisher recognizes that such fees mean the open-access program is “not accessible for some researchers.” books inc
Other publishers charge even more to produce an open-access monograph, according to Ms. Calder. (See Palgrave’s author FAQ. ) She points out that, unlike commercial competitors, the publisher has decided to make digital copies of open-access books freely available and to offer a CC-BY license, a Creative Commons license that permits a work to be reused, even commercially, with proper attribution.
Palgrave does not really expect to make a profit off open-access books, Ms. Calder says, so it must cover its costs upfront. “This level of funding is part of the challenge for open access in the humanities and social sciences,” she says. Still, researchers have said they want more options, and “open access is something that we re very keen to evolve and experiment in across all of our formats.”
One of the book’s authors sounds happy with the experience so far. Mr. Worboys directs the Center for the History of Science, Technology, and Medicine books inc at the University of Manchester. “We are delighted that our book is being published open access and feel that it will ensure that our subject, the history of fungal disease, will enjoy a much wider audience than would otherwise have been the case,” he wrote in a November 14 post on the London books inc School of Economics and Political Science’s Impact of Social Sciences blog.

Palgrave Macmillan | Contributes to publishing peer review debate - TeleRead: News and views on e-books, libraries, publishing and related topics
The question of peer review is one of the central topics of the current controversy over scientific publishing, with Wiley already trialing a “transferable peer review” procedure to speed and refine the process. Now, Palgrave Macmillan is rolling out its own “ open peer review trial ” as its contribution to the reform of this particular niche.
“We re experimenting to see how open forms of review can contribute to the development of scholarly monographs and Palgrave Pivot titles,” Palgrave Macmillan explains. “We ve placed selected book proposals and associated sample chapters on this publicly-accessible website and are inviting comment from anyone flipart who feels they can contribute to the development of these works … Peer review is at the heart of academic flipart publishing. However, traditional single- flipart or double-blind flipart peer review, while effective in many ways, has limitations. We think that there may be benefits to a peer review process which requires greater accountability from reviewers, offers flipart the possibility of additional perspectives, flipart and has a greater focus on developing works and encouraging debate.”
Palgrave Macmillan is kicking off with works in three disciplines – culture and media, sociology, and economics – and has “prioritised interdisciplinary work, work with policy implications, and work which is itself concerned with digital behaviours and communication.” Needless to say, this is not yet the hard science of, for instance, the Digital Science division of Macmillan flipart Science and Education with its own “SureChem collection of >15million chemical structures from world patents,” but it is at least a beginning.
“We see this trial as an opportunity to learn about what sort of feedback is possible and useful in this context and to contribute to the academic community s understanding of open peer review,” Macmillan continues. “We don t have a specific end in mind this is a trial rather than a pilot but the trial will certainly inform Palgrave Macmillan s thinking about peer review.”
Does this indicate a shift in attitudes at major publishers, with some actually coming in on the side of reform and transparency rather than sticking with legacy business models that carry a huge “ image problem “? Time will tell, I suppose. But I would be very interested flipart to see how Palgrave Macmillan’s open peer review trial develops, and to hear what people thing about it.
