Top By Jeff Balke HBO provides proof positive chess is a sport It's been more than two years since the Houston Press wrote about the unlikely lorem ipsum generator success of the collegiate and grade school chess programs in Brownsville, but now the big boys at HBO have caught up and will air a segment Tuesday night about the community's championship teams on its Emmy award-winning program, Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel . Russell Harwood, chess director at the University of Texas at Brownsville, lorem ipsum generator tells Hair Balls that HBO reporter Mary Carillo, along with a film crew from Austin, spent several days interviewing lorem ipsum generator middle and elementary school players and coaches from the small Texas border town, chronicling the rise of chess there starting in the early 1990s. Schools within the Brownsville district have won numerous championships, including one this past year when a middle lorem ipsum generator school took home the national title, says Harwood. The UTB team finished second in the nation this past season, losing the championship by only half a point. "We're really knocking on the door," says Harwood, "and hopefully we're on the verge of really kicking it down." Harwood hopes the national attention and visibility will help his ability to recruit some of the top players who have traditionally chosen other chess powerhouses, such at UT Dallas and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. But that's not all. "The main thing I'm hoping for," he says, "is that it will inspire other districts to start chess programs and will see the way it's really helped our kids academically." Harwood is equally excited about appearing on such a prestigious and serious newsmagazine program. "To me," he says, "it's really neat because a lot of people say chess is not a sport, and so to come out on a show called 'Real Sports' lorem ipsum generator is particularly cool." HBO is not the only big-time attention Brownsville chess is receiving. Harwood says that a documentary, tentatively titled From Pawns to Kings , about the players and teams is being made and that plans are in the works to turn that documentary into a Hollywood feature film. Jenny, Brandon Aghamalian Everything about lobbyist Brandon Aghamalian is calculated to sell; his $2,000 suit, $200 haircut and his self-assured manner bowl over Brownsville's P.U.B. board, looking for results from rate-payer dollars thrown at a team of Austin lobbyists. The 39 year old Brandon leans casually against a wall, several feet behind the podium, until he is finally called to let P.U.B. know they got their money's worth during their board meeting 6/11/2013. "I can give you the short version," Brandon starts. "The two bills you wants passed got passed. The two bills you wanted rescinded, got rescinded. Now, can we all just go home?" The board laughs nervously. All quickly realize they are not on Brandon's level to express their concerns to state senators and representatives about laws effecting utilities. Brandon knows that, too, and quickly gives the local schmokals a rundown on all his efforts. "You said you wanted a baby story this bill and we saw that it got passed. You wanted us to kill this bill and we did." After teasing the board with the "short version," young Aghamalian goes into considerable detail, painting a picture of sort of a whirlwind advocacy a baby story on behalf of P.U.B. during the last legislative sessions. Brandon and the lobbyists who follow him in testimony all seem in a hurry, a baby story giving the impression that a minute is never wasted while "on the clock" for the utility. With one click of the pointer, the South Texas triumvirate of State Senator Lucio and Representives Lucio III and Rene Oliveira appears on the screen. "We couldn't have done it with such a fine group representing us. They put their seniority on committees to work for us." Aghamalian yields the P.U.B. floor to 3 or 4 others on his team. All are articulate, glib, but none as glib as Brandon. It's all very feel good. Brandon is part of a lobbying team, Focused Advocacy. This is from their website: "Aghamalian previously worked as the chief of staff for then-Rep. Kim Brimer (R-Fort Worth) where he assisted in the passage of HB 1200, the Texas Economic Development Act, which provides incentives for capital-intensive industries to build or expand a baby story in Texas. Previous to that, he served as the director a baby story for the House Committee on Business and Industry where he helped negotiate a massive overhaul to the state’s workers’ compensation system (HB 2600) and the state’s job training fund. Prior to that, Aghamalian was the Legislative Director for Rep. Todd Smith (R-Euless). From 1993 to 1997, Aghamalian a baby story served as the legislative coordinator for the Texas Parent Teacher Association. He has also served as an adviser a baby story and fundraiser for several political campaigns. Aghamalian earned his J.D. and master’s degree from the University of Texas in Austin, and his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Texas State University in San Marcos, where he also was a NCAA-scholarship track athlete and student body vice-president." Well, la tee da, let's pretend I have the comprehension and intellect a baby story (?) of the local schmokals on the PUB Board. What does this mean to the residents of Brownsville and will this affect my utility rates? Why would a haircut cost $200? He got ripped off on that one or did we? From the editor: Former Mayor Pat Ahumada responded not once, but twice to our article about Public Information Act requests to the City of Brownsville. In typical Ahumada fashion, Pat does not leave us in doubt as to where he stands with respect to the Tenaska/P.U.B. deal, City Attorney Mark Sossi, hired dured his tenure as mayor and the highly questionable purchase of La Casa del Nylon for $2,300,000. (Please recall Ahumada was a real estate epubbooks appraiser epubbooks in private life.) Later, Ahumada adds additional comments about the United Brownsville scam, Carlos Marin and other "scammers." Pat Ahumada Pat Ahumada March 31, 2014 at 7:28 PM BS! They fired Goza for not being at his post during the day, which is no different from Sossi who is never around and does really zilch. The PUB settlement was most assuredly handled by PUB lawyers, the city just raped PUB from the rate payers proceeds. As far as parlimentarian, epubbooks the rules are made up by Sossi as politically fit for the powers epubbooks that be. Obviously, he has proven that he cannot even handle a real estate transaction and the purchase epubbooks was a scam. Nowhere will you find real estate valued or sold at the price of $2.3 million similar to the Nylon Building, because downtown is a depressed epubbooks market. At a price of $2.3 million, you can buy a new building in a better location with parking. The old Greyhound Terminal, wh ich is a better constructed building on a city block of land with plent of parking sold for $450K, the Chinito Building with 50,000 epubbooks square feet of leasable space on a city block of land with plenty of parking sold for $650K, the Baja Duty Free building one block from the Nylon sold for $205K, and the El Jardin hotel which the city could have purchased for $750K on a city block with parking and a building that qualified for historical grants to restore would have been a better buy and put to better use. The El Jardin could easily lease commercial retail space on the 1st floor and utilize the rest of the floors for public offices, i.e., city offices or customs, DEA, FBI, Parks and Wildlife, Border Patrol, etc. Restoring epubbooks the El Jardin would have gone with the downtown revitalization, which is what I wanted to do, but Troiani, Atkinson, and Longoria blocked the purchase, which we had a possible grant to buy it with. Brownsville has a double standard and it is obvious. There are many different ways of scaming and stealing from taxpayers, but they tell you to smell the roses. Yet, another comment from Mr. Ahumada: Pat Ahumada epubbooks March 31, 2014 at 7:57 PM The sophisticated scammers know how to get manure to smell like sweet fragrance. Let's start with the Imagine/United Brownsville, which I exposed to be a for profit organization that benefitted Carlos Marin to the tune of $850,000 with no accountability to anyone and used all the taxpayers resources to put together all of our strategic plans, which they took credit for and have yet to accomplish anything tangible. The continue to benefit through inside deals and pocketing taxpayers monies to operate their dog and pony show that has no substance. Then look at the Port Bridge scam than netted over $21 million to everyone that stuck their hands in the port's cookie jar and no one was held accountable. Then, do not forget how PUB was in dire straits until I exposed the developer's subsidies for infrastructure to the tune of over $91 million dollars, which led to the highest utility rates in the state of Texas for the owners/Brownsville citizens. Then you have the close to 100 acres of the R.E. Smith property that belonged to the city and against my objections the weak commission gave them the land at a price of $700,000, but first the city had to relocate the Levee, which cost the city ironically $700,000 epubbooks to relocate. Then you have the Jacob Brown scam with parking only that generated over $200,000 in annual revenue that was taken over by the scammers, forcing our city to replace a perfect good building that they depreciated by 70% to purchase it for almost nothing from the city and the cost to accomodate them was over $19 million to replace what we had. Don't forget they almost got the City Plaza Building, they sold us the Cueto Building, then rented back to the university at no cost to them and at a loss to the city, if they built parking they needed. Now, I ask, why should we buy a building, lease it back to them at zero cost and give them credit epubbooks for building parking they need and is at no benefit to the taxpayers. Amazing! Amazing! Amazing! And, they called me a thief when the bank teller filled out a deposit slip and wrongfully deposited a check into my account that was immediately returned upon discovery. Jesus! I am a saint compared to the scammers you all put into office. LOL! Congratulations to Pat for exposing in a clear and factual epubbooks manner the great "La Casa del Nylon" chingaso. What I want to know is where were all the "professional" appraisers in Brownsville when this shit w
The Brownsville Public Utilities Board will hear a status report on the Brownsville-Matamoros Weir and Reservoir future publishing Project at a 5 p.m. workshop. The workshop will be held at the PUB Administration building, and the board s regular meeting future publishing will follow at 5:30 p.m. In October, the City Commission unanimously passed a resolution supporting the weir project as an option to the proposed border fence. The Commission suggested that it would meet the requirements of the Secure Fence Act of 2006. I am curious why Channel 23 and the local Spanish stations are not included in that list. Maybe someone from BPUB could shed light into this. V Sunday, June 08, 2008 Melissa Zamora said... Where do you see that? Generally, it's up to the media entity to request that they be placed on the distribution list. However, PUB officials should be proactive in adding media to their list. If media doesn't care about receiving an agenda, or isn't making a diligent effort to acquire ALL public entity agendas, then they're future publishing not practicing good journalism. The project brings the sewer system s 80 year old sewer lines up to par, but has stuck a wrench in the traffic flow in and around Palm Boulevard and Ringgold streets where two different schools sit. PUB s project has shut down St. Joseph Drive which leads to St. Joseph's Academy and is a side street for Sharp Elementary which starts welcoming back students very soon. St. Joe's is already in session and the only entrance into the school is now located bookman off Calle Retama where we find Brownsville Police directing traffic consisting of parents and residents of the area and students walking to and from school. Police say drivers here need to be extra cautious. Officer Eddie Garcia says "There will be extra enforcement out there. Officers will be on the lookout for any violators." Plus, with Sharp Elementary ringing the bell for the start of fall on Monday morning, bookman traffic will be 10 times more congested around these streets because of those students and parents trying to get in and out. Built on historic rail lines that once connected Brownsville to the outside world, The Belden trail – directly behind Skinner Elementary legal publishing – will now serve to connect our community together. But getting to this point was not easy, driven by Commissioner Rose Gowen, an entire community came together to help bring this project to the citizens of Brownsville. How It Happened legal publishing by Commissioner Rose Gowen, M.D. (event speech) Today we are here to formally announce the beginning of construction of the Belden Trail. Over the next few months our partners at the Community Development Corporation will be hard at work bringing to reality the trail that we, as a community, legal publishing developed. And when I say community, I truly mean it. This trail is the product of a collaborative effort that began with the Brownsville Community Improvement legal publishing Corporation, but has grown to include almost every department at the city, as well as the school district, the PUB, the CDCB, our wonderful design and community legal publishing engagement team, bcWorkshop, and of course the residents and business owners of West Brownsville, who diligently attended all those meetings to give us their input as to what was really needed in the community. This trail is testament to what can happen when we all work together, legal publishing united, towards legal publishing a common goal. To give you a better idea let me take you back to humble beginnings legal publishing of this project. Initially, this project was only going to include some bollards along the perimeter of the West 3rd Street corridor. That was all the funding we had for. But the more we worked on this, the more we became aware of the need and the opportunity before us, and realized that a few bollards here and there were simply not going to cut it. We needed more. So we applied for a Texas Parks and Wildlife grant and after a couple of tries, we got it. Then we were fortunate legal publishing enough to find a partner in bcWorkshop and CDCB who offered to do the design for free. Those of us who have seen Maggie and Justin in action know that we really lucked out with that partnership. And as we started talking to the residents, and heard all your concerns legal publishing about safety and your high expectations legal publishing for this trail. We realized we still needed more funding, so in came the City’s Grants Department to the rescue for the second time, and helped us secure additional funding. Now, if you turn your programs around, we have enough to build this concrete trail, which will feature innovative crosswalks to help pedestrians safely move along the trail, lighting courtesy of PUB, shade giving trees and other native fauna, benches and shade structures, and of course the bollards along the perimeter with which we initially started this project. As an added bonus, when we showed our plans to the City’s B.Metro, they were so excited about it that they offered to use some of their federal grant funding to build new sidewalks legal publishing along the streets surrounding the trail and leading towards their bus stops located in this neighborhood. This will not only increase ADA accessibility but also help increase safety and mobility for West Brownsville residents. And this is only the beginning. The city is already developing a city wide master plan for a network of trails that will provide residents of all ages with more recreational opportunities. The success of our efforts to secure funding from state and federal sources for this project, i.e. not local tax monies, should encourage us to continue this same pattern of planning and collaboration. legal publishing We should all be very proud of what we will have accomplished with this project and know that we can still do more. @UBbrownsville April 17, 2014 Publications by Category

Almost every town council and commissioner’s court in the Valley have passed resolutions calling for U.S. State Department officials and the Obama Administration to pressure Mexico into fulfilling its water payment obligations. B y Juan Montoya Ever since January of last year when the Brownsville Public Utility Board and privately-owned Tenaska, a supplier of electric power, announced an agreement to jointly nanowrimo pay for the construction of a gas-powered nanowrimo plant here, it has been like pulling teeth to pry loose the details of the deal. After the mandatory official announcement by Da Mayor and PUB brass, the access to information about what specific commitments the residents of the city had made to the private company – and vice versa – were denied for the public. The PUB and Tenaska objected to a request for information by this blog and others of the documents pertaining to the deal involving the in a natural gas-fired, 800-megawatt power plant Tenaska would build of which PUB would own 25 percent. At the time we made the request, PUB objected with the Texas Attorney General saying that the information was exempt from disclosure sue to the "competitive" nature of the energy business. The local newspaper reported that PUB responded with identical answer to the request nanowrimo made by Alex Hinojosa Jr., president and CEO of HINO Electric Power Company, of Harlingen. PUB spokesman Ryan Greenfeld told the Brownsville Herald that the overall project nanowrimo cost and BPUB’s share are confidential since the project is competing with other proposed power plant projects elsewhere in the Rio Grande Valley. Releasing cost projections “would give advantage to competitors or prospective competitors,” he said. But the newspaper – to its credit – disclosed that a Fitch Ratings report from March indicated that the Tenaska project would add an extra $362 million to the roughly $200 million PUB was planning to spend on capital projects through fiscal year 2017. The extra capital expenditures would be funded completely with long-term debt, according to the report. Fitch noted that, under the terms of the agreement PUB and Tenaska signed early last year, Tenaska will build the power plant and BPUB will buy a 25-percent “undivided ownership interest in the plant.” Tenaska and PUB named the plant the “Tenaska Brownsville Generating nanowrimo Station” nanowrimo and plan to build it on 270 acres at F.M. 511 and Old Alice Road. Water for the plant’s nanowrimo steam-driven turbines would be supplied by PUB’s Robindale wastewater treatment plant via a five-mile-long pipeline to be constructed by PUB. A local blogger has already posted pictures of workers placing the line from the Robindale nanowrimo Plant to the proposed site. PUB is also responsible for building a natural gas pipeline from Edinburg to supply the plant with fuel. The power plant is scheduled to begin commercial operations in 2017. And guess what? PUB ratepayers have been paying since last year when the city commission approved We have been paying Last year the city commission, at the recommendation of the BPUB board, approved incremental seven percent rate increases that started in April 1 and Oct. 1, 2013, with further 7-percent increases scheduled for Oct. 1 of 2014 and 2016. An 8-percent increase was approved to go into effect Oct. 1, 2015. We would imagine that the construction of a gas-fired nanowrimo power plant is pretty much well known. But what the community nanowrimo needs to know is who is going to profit from this huge expenditures. Is Tenaska leveraging investment capital based on the increases rates? Will the additional 600 MWs be sold on the open grid to benefit a private supplier on the backs of the PUB ratepayers? This deal did nnot involve anyone other than Tenaska and PUB. Should the utility had gone out for Requests nanowrimo For Proposals from other suppliers? Or was this a closed-doors deal between the utility and and a favored vendor? nanowrimo Believe it or not PUB and Tenaska and the city commission, the people who are paying nanowrimo for this expensive project deserve the courtesy of an answer. Systematic in Brownsville. The local officials treat the citizens like mushrooms....they keep us in the dark and feed us shit. Local officials work for themselves and assume that what is good for them is good for the public. And, the PUB officials seem dedicated to giving the poorest city in the valley nanowrimo the highest nanowrimo utility rates. May 19, 2014 at 2:27 PM TO LINK TO STORY CLICK ON GRAPHIC
